First edition in French, folio, two parts in one volume, added engraved title present in first volume, lacking half-title, first title page printed in red and black with engraved vignette; lacking engraved title in the second volume; illustrated with four folding maps, twenty-eight folding plates, and nineteen full-page plates, many by William Hogarth; bound in full contemporary parchment over boards with an unidentified armorial shield tooled in black on both boards with the initials C.V.R.A.M; somewhat rubbed; ex libris Joseph Karabarek, with his bookplate dated 1905 designed by Ernst August Krahl pasted inside the front board, 12 1/4 x 8 in.

Mottraye traveled extensively for twenty-six years, making tracks in the Middle East, Scandinavia, and beyond. The illustrations include dancing Dervishes, the interior of a Turkish bath, ancient coins and other artifacts, an image of village life in Lapland, Sweden, and other places exotic to western Europeans in the 18th century.
